I've read all the threads here and a mess more elsewhere about Chevy SB's with hunks broken off the starter mounting boss, the resultant sound of screaming banshees as the starter gear grinds against the flexplate and of course the engine not starting. It's a monster problem, but you guys are monster wrenches and have posted a variety of knowledgeable solutions. Sadly, from what I've read, the same solution doesn't work for everyone, my head is going to explode from all the possibilities tried and yet to be tried, and still my issue persists. Allow me to say: "AAARRRRGGHHGGH!!!"
Jezebelle, my '61 Apache with a '75 350 SB truck or van engine and Turbo 350 tranny in her hates me. She'll start without a problem from 1- to a number of times that makes me believe she is on the cusp of reliability, the fail again. I have the proverbial missing hunk-o-boss, I've shimmed in directions beyond the 3rd dimension, braced it, chocked it, changed bolts, and starters, sworn a blue streak, threatened her with the boneyard, had a priest perform an exorcism then bless her, and hired a working witch to enchant her but all to no avail. The problem still exist, tho not much of my hair does anymore.
Sooo, here's my question: Is it possible, the mounting surface area that went AWOL along with the missing chunk-o-boss is just enuff missing grippage to allow the slippage? If this should be the case, anybody know where I can buy a can of Boss come-back spray? Would I find that near the Rattle-B-Gone, or on the aisle with bolts made of unobtainium?
Since loosening the bolts and biasing the starter toward the flexplate and inboard before tightening the starter back up works-- usually anyway, but only temporarily, it seems obvious to me that starter is moving somewhat, and that it isn't secured as well as it should be. I'm also at a loss in understanding which-a-way the darn thing migrates when it slips, the amount is small enuff to remain unseen by my ignorant eyes. I assume just the opposite of the direction I bias the starter when I readjust it?
Help me Mr. Wizard!
